The Ministry of Government Communication, in cooperation with the All Jordan Youth Commission (AJYC), on Wednesday organized a seminar titled “Media and Information Literacy” at the commission’s headquarters in Mshairfeh, Karak, with the participation of young male and female volunteers from across the governorate.
The seminar was held as part of the ministry and commission’s efforts to raise media awareness among young people, strengthen their skills in verifying information and countering rumors and misinformation, and equip them with critical thinking skills. The efforts aim to help build an informed generation capable of confronting media disinformation and engaging responsibly with the digital space and social media platforms.
Lecturer Yousef Abu Rumman introduced participants to the concept of media literacy, the basics of distinguishing between accurate and misleading news, how algorithms work and ways of addressing the challenges posed by artificial intelligence. He also discussed content creation, the production of images and videos, publishing ethics, and distinguishing between traditional media and citizen journalism.
Abu Rumman said the importance of media and digital literacy comes amid exposure to an enormous volume of news, images, videos and information, as well as rapid advances in artificial intelligence technologies, making the ability to distinguish between authentic and misleading content both more difficult and more important.
Director of the ministry’s Media Policies and Foreign Media Directorate Dr. Majd Al Amad said the ministry continues to cooperate with the All-Jordan Youth Commission on an issue that has become part of daily life: media and information literacy. She added that the ministry’s focus on young people through such meetings stems from the fact that they have the strongest presence and highest levels of engagement in the digital space, noting that young people today are not merely recipients of information, but also producers and publishers of content.
Amad noted that media literacy initiatives in Jordan began in 2014, focusing on capacity building and integrating media literacy concepts into school curricula and extracurricular activities, culminating in the Cabinet’s recent decision on the second National Media and Information Literacy Strategy (2026-2029).
